How much oil does my heating system burn in a day?

One question we get a lot here at Holden is “how much heating oil will I need?”

If we’re honest, the real answer is “we’re not sure.” The reason it’s hard to give a straight answer is that there are so many variables involved in estimating how much heating oil you will use, including:

Still, if you want to get at least some idea of how much heating oil you’re likely to use per day here in Massachusetts, here’s a rule of thumb: for a 2,500 to 3,000 square-foot home in our North Shore service area, you should expect to burn anywhere from five to eight gallons or more of heating oil per day during the height of winter.

Using that figure, a full 275-gallon tank (which actually only holds about 230 gallons of fuel – the rest is needed for air) should last you about five to six weeks.

Just remember: that figure is an estimate! Every home is different and uses different amounts of heating oil every day during the cold months.

To get a more accurate idea of how much heating oil your home will use, give us a call: If you have been a Holden customer for a year or more, we can give you a pretty accurate estimate of how much heating oil you can expect to need in the winter ahead. If you have only recently become a Holden Oil customer or plan to join the Holden family soon, but know how big your house is, contact us and we’ll tell give you an estimate based on a typical house your size.
